I AM who I AM (continued)

Here we see a perfect example of something that we all struggle with. How do I define God? Who am I supposed to say that God is? We spend so much time trying to fit God into something that makes sense to us. We want something to wrap our hands around that can be placed into a nice neat package. We often have awesome encounters with God just as Moses did but when it’s over we frustrate and exhaust ourselves trying to figure out and define a God that’s indescribable. Then when God doesn’t fit into our box, we either doubt Him or doubt ourselves.

In scripture there is a pattern that I feel is often overlooked. Most of the time when you encounter God, you don’t just learn who He is, you learn who you are. (See Isaiah 6, Romans 7:24, Psalm 22:6) Moses is learning a lesson that we all need to learn. We don’t define God, He defines us.

My challenge to you today; have an encounter with the Almighty God and during that time don’t try to define Him. Let Him define you. When you see yourself in light of who He is, you can’t help but worship Him.

I have to remind myself daily. “I’m not a Christian because I figured God out, I’m a Christian because He figure me out. I don’t define Him, He defines me.”
